The Hoover Company...And "Boss" Hoover

When I was growing up (in Southwestern Pennsylvania in the 1960's) a vacuum cleaner was called a sweeper. One thing of which you can be assured, the sweeper was a Hoover.

Bob Prince, the renowned voice of the Pittsburgh Pirates who is in the Baseball Hall of Fame, would say, "We need a Hoover..." when the Bucs needed a double play. How else could they clean off the bases?

If I understand correctly, Hoover is a verb in the UK meaning to vacuum the floor.

Recently the corporation who owns The Hoover Company announced it is closing what was once Hoover's flagship facility in North Canton, Ohio. It's not only a bad thing for the local economy, in my mind it's a bad thing for America.

"Boss" Hoover founded the company. In a park across the street from the former Hoover headquarters is a statue of him. His work with young people may have meant more than the work he did in the business world; it's a fitting monument.

I could not help but wonder, while I was shooting these photographs, what must be going on in his mind.

Since this gray day I've never gone back to shoot. Somehow, that seems fitting.

Mr Hoover is probably spinning in his grave at the thought that his company is being closed down. I think Hoover was one of the first vaccuums to come on the market certainly in England but there are so many brands around here now, they have a lot of competition. Dysons are popular here.

This is really touching. Another icon bites the dust. Sigh. Our Carnival host must have been amazed at yet more baseball imagery. Perfect timing. Thanks for sharing this and I'm sorry. I know it sounds silly but, it truly is a loss. I understand the sentiment. :)
